
{"id":8105,"date":"2022-10-14T11:25:10","date_gmt":"2022-10-14T09:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/supercykelstier.dk\/concept\/?page_id=8105"},"modified":"2024-08-14T11:13:05","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T09:13:05","slug":"lightning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/supercykelstier.dk\/concept\/design-and-build\/lightning\/","title":{"rendered":"Lighting on cycle superhighways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lighting has a significant impact on cyclists&#8217; accessibility, flow, safety, and sense of security and is especially important for commuters as as they tend to cycle during the dark hours, which makes up rush hours for about half of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good lighting allows cyclists to orient themselves, to actually see the path ahead, and identify any conditions that need to be taken into account, such as puddles, fallen leaves, potholes, or other users of the path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lighting also has a significant impact on the social sense of security, especially on cycle paths in own course. In Denmark, for much of the year, the dark hours include most of the commuter hours. Good lighting during the dark hours are therefore crucially important, for example for when choosing a route or even choosing to cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following principles apply for lighting on cycle superhighways in the Cycle Superhighway Collaboration in the Capital Region: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group accordion has-background-green-lighter-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-239228e0 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-top-left-radius:20px;border-top-right-radius:20px;border-bottom-left-radius:20px;border-bottom-right-radius:20px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Principles for lighting on cycle superhighways<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group panel is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center header is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\" id=\"hvem-star-bag-supercykelstierne-icon-name-arrow-down-long-prefix-fat\">Good lighting \u2014 in every surrounding <i class=\"fat fa-arrow-down-long\"><\/i><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group content has-white-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:2rem;padding-right:2rem;padding-bottom:0.5rem;padding-left:2rem\">\n<p>On cycle superhighways, there should be good lighting in all types of surroundings. This applies to cycle superhighways in urban areas, rural areas, forest areas, protected areas, as well as on bridges, and through tunnels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group panel is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center header is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hvem-star-bag-supercykelstierne-icon-name-arrow-down-long-prefix-fat\">Lighting on cycle superhighways should be even, consistent, and regular <i class=\"fat fa-arrow-down-long\"><\/i><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group content has-white-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:2rem;padding-right:2rem;padding-bottom:0.5rem;padding-left:2rem\">\n<p>Cycle superhighways should have even, uniform, and consistent lighting. This means that the lighting should be in lighting class E2+<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group panel is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center header is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hvem-star-bag-supercykelstierne-icon-name-arrow-down-long-prefix-fat\">The lighting should ensure that cyclists can see ahead \u2014 both the bicycle path and in the roadside areas. <i class=\"fat fa-arrow-down-long\"><\/i><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group content has-white-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:2rem;padding-right:2rem;padding-bottom:0.5rem;padding-left:2rem\">\n<p>The longitudinal lighting on the cycle superhighway should, both within and outside built environment, ensure that cyclists can navigate forward and can see any obstacles on the path or in the roadside areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendations for lighting on cycle superhighways<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On cycle superhighways it is recommended to at least follow the recommendations and regulations outlined by the Danish Road Directorate<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000009cb0000000000000000_8105\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000009cb0000000000000000_8105-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000009cb0000000000000000_8105-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Vejregler: H\u00e5ndbog for Vejbelysning anl\u00e6g og planl\u00e6gning, 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/vejregler.dk\/h\/7e0fba84-06dd-483b-898a-c7b3e3affaa1\/d6c2d72dcbf247cfb7f5b2b2322167f3?showExact=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Link<\/a><\/span>. As a starting point, road lighting should also be designed to cover the cycle path and sidewalk. This should be taken into account if there are changes to the road geometry in connection with the construction of a cycle superhighway. The lighting class entails demands for lighting level, shielding, glaring limitations, and consistency in lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, downwards-directed lighting is preferable recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Road Directorate recommends lighting class E2 for paths, but for cycle superhighways, the recommendation is lighting class E2+. This allows cyclists to see further ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When installing masts, it is important to be mindful of trees and other vegetation that may potentially obstruct the lighting during spring and summer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:500px\">\n<div style=\"height:13px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized has-custom-border\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/supercykelstier.dk\/concept\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/12\/C842258-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"border-radius:30px;width:407px;height:271px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Open land and green areas<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-accent-background-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top has-white-color has-accent-background-color has-text-color has-background has-small-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);flex-basis:1000px\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Open land and green areas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On cycle superhighways running through open land, it is also recommended to use lighting class E2+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it is not possible to have lighting class E2+ due to reasons like nature conservation, then lighting class E4 can be considered. Lighting class E4 is lighting in the form of a &#8220;guiding star system, solely intended to indicate the path of a trail or similar.&#8221;<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"5\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000009cb0000000000000000_8105\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000009cb0000000000000000_8105-5\">5<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000009cb0000000000000000_8105-5\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"5\">Vejregler: H\u00e5ndbog for Vejbelysning anl\u00e6g og planl\u00e6gning, 2020, s.21. <a href=\"https:\/\/vejregler.dk\/h\/7e0fba84-06dd-483b-898a-c7b3e3affaa1\/d6c2d72dcbf247cfb7f5b2b2322167f3?showExact=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Link<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-primary-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-radius:20px\">\n<p style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">Use of lighting in class E4 could for example be: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Install low bollards that illuminate the entire path, although not as uniformly as with lighting class E2+.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dispersed guide light with for example diodes that are energized by solar cells. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:4px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">These examples are beneficial in guiding the course of the path and works better when the cycle path is in its own course and away from the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a cycle superhighway runs through green areas, there may be challenges with lighting that could disturb wildlife. In these cases, it is important to initiate a dialogue with nature conservation organizations to find a solution that considers wildlife while still providing cyclists with guide lighting on the cycle path. Test projects within lighting are continuously conducted to accommodate both wildlife and cyclists.
